Entry into force of the 15th edition of the Locarno Classification (classification for registered designs)

On 1 January 2025, the 15th edition of the international classification for industrial designs (Locarno Classification) and the list of goods (list of products for designs) (version: ELD2025_LOC15) entered into force.

The German translation of the products contained in the 15th edition of the Locarno Classification is part of the list of products for designs, which also contains other permitted national entries.

The new edition of the list of classes and subclasses of the Locarno Classification and the new version of the list of products for designs apply to all design applications filed on or after 1 January 2025. Furthermore, in the process of renewal, registered designs will be reclassified ex officio in accordance with the new edition of the Locarno Classification if the class of the products registered with respect to them has changed.

The list of classes and subclasses of the 15th edition of the Locarno version and the list of products for designs were published by the German Patent and Trade Mark Office in the Federal Gazette (Bundesanzeiger).

To search permitted product terms for the product indication in the context of design applications, the German Patent and Trade Mark Office offers an online search engine (in German). For the electronic filing of design applications using DPMAdirektWeb, the current list of products for designs is provided when selecting the product indication. The current version of the list of products for designs is also available for the DPMAdirektPro software, provided that the update function of the software is used.
