Using brands and patents successfully – nationwide campaign week with free orientation consultations for small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups

Press release of 30 August 2018

Munich. How can trade marks and inventions be protected? What is the point of intellectual property? And how can it be used successfully on the market? As part of a nationwide campaign week organised by the German Patent and Trade Mark Office and the German patent information centres, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups can obtain advice on the economic use of IP rights. The orientation consultations will take place during the campaign week from 24 to 28 September 2018 in eleven cities and are entitled "Wertschöpfung mit Ideen- und Innovationsschutz" (Value creation with protection of ideas and innovation). The two cooperation partners organised the campaign week for the first time last year – with great response.

Tailor-made advice for every company

In the course of the campaign week, companies receive free, neutral and confidential advice on value creation and risk avoidance in dealing with intellectual property (IP). During the orientation consultations of about two hours, experts from the patent information centres analyse the company-specific IP situation. This particularly concerns industrial property rights (patents, utility models, trade marks and designs), but also aspects of "soft IP", which includes trade secrets and copyright issues. On this basis, companies receive an initial assessment of their economic opportunities and risks in the field of intellectual property with specific recommendations for action – from individual suggestions for the best use of intellectual property in the company to approaches for strategic competitive advantages.

The campaign week is part of the EU’s VIP4SME ("Value Intellectual Property for SMEs") project with more than 30 participating partners from industry, research and administration in Europe and beyond. The project aims to enable companies to better identify and strategically exploit the economic potential of their intellectual property.
