Contact with the DPMA
a) Contact and communication
- (1) Data processing
You can contact the DPMA by e-mail, telephone, fax or via our social media channels.
Depending on the way you contact us and the content of your enquiry, the personal data required for dealing with your enquiry will be processed. For example, in the case you contact us by e-mail, letter or telephone, your name and the data required for replies will be stored and used for the purpose of responding to your enquiry. In the case of posts on social media we will refer to, for example, your user name in responses.
The data will exclusively be used for communication purposes and for our administrative activities.
By submitting your enquiry (e.g. e-mail, message/comment on social media, phone call, fax or letter by post), you consent to the use of the personal contact data disclosed to the DPMA for the processing of the conversation.
- (2) Legal basis
The legal basis for the use of contact data for communicating with you is point (a) of Article 6(1) of the General Data Protection Regulation. Processing of the data is necessary for the performance of our tasks within the framework of our administrative activities, cf. point (e) of Article 6(1) of the General Data Protection Regulation in conjunction with section 3 of the Federal Data Protection Act.
- (3) Purpose of data processing
Your personal data will be used for processing and documenting your enquiry within the scope of the statutory duty to inform the public and for the purposes of the administrative activities of the DPMA.
- (4) Duration of storage
The data will be deleted as soon as they are no longer necessary to achieve the purpose for which they were collected and the provisions on proper record keeping no longer require their continued storage.
- (5) Option of objecting and of removal
You can object to the storage of your personal data any time if you contact us. In that case, the conversation cannot be continued. You can object by sending a notification to this effect.
All personal data stored within the course of establishing contact and which do not have to be kept in accordance with an internal order of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office regarding storage and destruction of documents, based on guidelines by the German government, will be deleted in this case.

b) Press mailing list
- (1) Data processing
You can register for the press mailing list on our website, indicating your personal data. After entering the data in an input screen, they will be transmitted to us and stored. The data will not be passed on to third parties.
The following data are collected in connection with the registration procedure:
- Name
- Address
- Phone, Fax
- Media company
- Editorial office
- Independent journalist
- Particular interest
All fields listed are optional except for the e-mail address.
By registering, you consent to the processing of your personal data for the purpose of sending information via the press mailing list.
- (2) Legal basis
The legal basis for the processing of data after the user registered on the press mailing list is point (a) of Article 6(1) of the General Data Protection Regulation.
- (3) Purpose of data processing
The purpose of collecting your e-mail address is to provide information about upcoming events and latest developments at the DPMA. The collection of other personal data facilitates processing. The data will exclusively be used for correspondence with you.
- (4) Duration of storage
The registration data will be deleted as soon as they are no longer necessary to achieve the purpose for which they were collected. This is the case for the data collected during the registration process if the registration on our website is cancelled or modified.
- (5) Option of objecting and of removal
As a user you can cancel your registration any time. You can have the data stored about you modified any time. You can unsubscribe on the registration page of the press mailing list.
- (6) Rights of data subjects

c) Newsletter
- (1) Data processing
You can subscribe to free newsletters with different focuses on our website, in particular to:
– a newsletter with current information from various fields of work of the DPMA, in particular on search tools and databases,
– the DPMAdirektPro newsletter with information on current developments or changes regarding electronic filing of IP applications at the DPMA,
– the technical newsletter with current technical information on the configuration, integration options and interface specification of DPMAdirektPro,
– the DPMAmitteilungen newsletter with references to publications of new Notices of the President of the DPMA as well as new Important Notices or Announcements of the DPMA.
You can register for the respective newsletter by sending an e-mail directly to us or by clicking on the linked DPMA e-mail address or by clicking the "Subscribe" button. Your e-mail address will be transmitted to us when you register for the respective newsletter.
By sending the e-mail you consent to the use of your e-mail address for sending out the respective newsletter.
No data will be passed on to third parties in connection with data processing for sending the respective newsletter. The data will be used exclusively for delivering the newsletter.
- (2) Legal basis
The legal basis for the processing of data after subscribing to the newsletter is point (a) of Article 6(1) of the General Data Protection Regulation.
- (3) Purpose of data processing
The purpose of collecting your e-mail address is to deliver the newsletter.
- (4) Duration of storage
The data will be deleted as soon as they are no longer necessary to achieve the purpose for which they were collected. Consequently, your e-mail address will be deleted when you unsubscribe from the respective newsletter.
- (5) Option of objecting and of removal
You can cancel your subscription to the respective newsletter any time. For this purpose, you can send a short e-mail, for which no special form is required, directly to the specified e-mail address or by clicking the “Unsubscribe” button.
